Independent researcher in both California and the Netherlands have discovered a weakness the Internet digital certificate infrastructure, which poses a threat of hackers impersonating site identifications trusted by most web browsers. In essence, hackers could make your browser believe it is on a secure website or email server while virtually undetectable phishing of your system is in progress.

The problem arises from one of several algorithms used to establish a secure https connection, known as MD5. This is not the first weakness discovered in MD5, either. A team of Chinese researchers presented the first one at a 2004 cryptology conference. In that case, they wee able to create a “collision attack, and generate two messages with the same digital signature.

The new discovery makes use of the collision method, but allows the hacker almost complete freedom in creating a rogue certification authority (CA) that will be verified by most commonly used web browsers, including both Microsoft and Mozilla. The team hopes to draw attention to this security weakness, and drive the industry to use stronger encryption methods.

Now, we realize that most dryers already sound a buzzer, but sometimes that buzzer is in the wrong room, or you’ve become too involved in something online to notice that outside world without a friendly reminder.

This video will show you how to create a dryer alert system of your own, and your imagination can guide you in creating the perfect alert for your own needs. For some, a big flashing sign may be enough, bot other among us might need our digital devices to do the notifying, and in that situation, getting a twitter from your dryer could be the perfect way to go.

Welcome to the age of science fiction. The Vuzix Wrap 920AV Video Sunglasses are identical to something you would expect to see only in the movies. Built to operate with any media device that provides audio and video output, these cool shades project a virtual screen. The screen is intended to mimic a 60 inch widescreen when viewed from 9 ft (3m) away.

But these are actually sunglasses, as well. While you are watching 3D content on the Vuzix Wrap 920AV, you are still free to interact with your physical environment. This could be a major step in the direction of a true interactive virtual reality, and optional devices for these sunglasses offer the ability to view augmented reality, which is a blend of computerized video with your physical surroundings. Perhaps the best, but not most accurate, example would be the heads-up display, which offers additional information to expand visual cues.

The basic unit provides private video display, both Virtual and Augmented Reality modes, and noise cancelling earphones, all in a package that weighs only around 3 ounces. The battery life is sufficient for most uses, as well, with an estimated battery life of 6 hours.

Rochester, NY – January 5th, 2009 – Vuzix Corporation is thrilled to announce a ground-breaking addition to the video eyewear market: the Wrap 920AV. As the demand for mobile access to digital entertainment and information skyrockets, Vuzix has once again pushed the envelope. This portable big screen solution with Vuzix’ proprietary Quantum optics technology allows for a “see-thru” video experience in the form of a functional pair of sunglasses and is upgradeable with optional accessories.

The stylish Wrap 920AV functions with any media playing device with a video output and projects a virtual 60-inch screen, as viewed from 9-feet. The state-of-the-art lens technology also allows users for the first time to view 3D video content while seeing and interacting with the real world. This incredible blend of reality and computer generated content will transform the world of portable video while opening up the consumer to previously impossible “location aware” applications. An optional 6-Degree of Freedom tracking sensor and/or Stereo Camera Pair will enable users to upgrade their Wrap 920AV to experience virtual, augmented and mixed reality environments.

Since the advent of the transistor in 1947, the power of computers has grown exponentially. Every year that goes by, the speed and power of computers has increased dramatically, causing many to wonder when the so called ‘doubling effect” will end. Until recently, many researchers had considered the wall within sight, but recent discoveries on the molecular level have changed all that.

Funded by the European Union, the CEMES Nanoscience and Picotechnology Group (GNS) has put together some of the brightest minds from 15 top academic and industrial research institutes, working on the problems of nano-computing and atomic scale computing. It will still be a few years before these machines are on the market, but the steps taken today will help guide near-future business ventures.

The goal is to create a logic gate, a single ON/OFF switch, in a molecule, and computing by comparing such set states at the molecular level. If successful, and early results indicate that the field is not only promising, but emerging, whole new levels of computing technology will open up, increasing the current speed and storage levels beyond anything currently imagined.

The iPod has created an industry of PMP (Personal Music Player) makers, but most were just that- music players. Chinavasion has introduced a new PMP that plays audio and video files of many types, including MP3, WAV, WMA, 3GP, and AVI.

Not only are a wide range of file types supported, but you also get aviewing option. The built-in 2.4 inch (320×240) TFT LCD, or use the included AV cables and connect to an external monitor. And if this still isn’t enough, throw in the fact that this little gadget also doubles as an NES emulator, allowing you to play a large number of NES games.

Want more? How about if the company throws in a built-in 1.3 megapixel camera for still shots and 3GP videos, a miniSD card slot, and an FM radio tuner?

The only feature that has been mentioned yet is the outstanding pricetag of just under US$50, which makes this PMP perfect for any budget.

One concern for the upcoming CES 2009 is the current worldwide financial shae-up. Many vendors are expected to cut back on their level of participatiion, while other are expected to ramp up and roll out the best they have available, hoping to draw in some consumer recognition and sales to follow up on 2008’s overall slump.

Mircosoft is expected to unveil Windows 7 at CES 2009, bringing the latest evolution of the software gient’s operating system into play at a critical time. Microsoft has been facing potential competition from many directions recently, including Google and various Open Source software offerings, and the company seems to pinning a lot of hope on cornering portions of the mobile computing market in 2009.

In addition to Microsoft, you can expect IBM, Intel, and Hewlitt Packard to put ina good showing, and other companies ar certain make make at least honorable appearances.

On the downside, this year’s attendance is expected to be quite a bit lower than in previous years, with pre-registration currently the lowest it has been since 2006. For those who attend CES for the party-like atmosphere, you may be a little this years, as tightening budgets are going to hamper the freebies and incentives that have been so common at conferences in the past.

Now you can watch television on your iPhone. Softbank recently relased its 1-Seg TV tuner, which allows integrating video directly to your screen. At US$108, the price isn’t as outrageous as you may have expected, but there are a couple fo quirks that you should be aware of.

First, don’t even think about watching a full length movie unles you have a power supply nerby. With the tuner connected, your iPhone doesn’t have but about 30 minutes of battery life. The tuner is great for filling in brief periods of time away from a wall outlet, but it isn’t going to be sutable for sustained usage.

An odd item with the Softbank TV Tuner is that it connects to your iPhone via syncronized cable connection, but the video is still transmitted via wi-fi. Keep this in mind, as you’ll have to be in range of a wi-fi connection for the device to work at all.

All in all, this is considered one of the best external add-ons available for the iPhone, and it’s sleek design in intended to mimic the iphone’s casing, adding acomplementary accessory.

The patent was rejected on several points, including the frequent usage of “fuzzy terminology” that did not properly define that intention, and the premise that many components of the aplication already exist in other forms.

This effectively quells Microsoft plans to channel users of their popular productivity products into individual permissions obtained electronically for the use of applications, both on the users machine, and online. WWhile this is most likely not the end of Microsoft’s plans, it will definitely send them back to the drawing board, or at least give them reason to consider existing technologies, rather than inventing the wheel all over again.

The new cars, with are rumored to use existing technology electric fuel cells, will be chargeable by home and work powered solar generating stations, and may even be supplemented by solar panels placed on the tops of vehicles.

As the world becomes more and more conscious of the dangers of fossil fuels, technology focuses increasingly on renewable resources, of which nothing known to mankind is more dependable or longer lasting than the sun. Of all possible fuel sources, sunlight is the only one which is already being supplied in vast quantities to the earth’s surface, where it is contributing to feared global warming. Harvesting that raw energy could have far reaching environmental repercussions, beginning with reduced carbon emissions, and progressing all the way through the gamut of ways to combat human-influenced global warming.
