Vancouver Datacenters and city wide power outage
Author JoeDigital
A full day of power outage basically has halted hundreds of online businesses and thousands of hosted clients. At approximately 9:30AM PST July 14th 2008 a BC Hydro substation literally went up in flames causing thousands of businesses to lose power downtown Vancouver. A major test of infrastructure and failure that surprised everyone was the Harbor center and as everyone knows in Vancouver this is the primary meet me point and internet hub for most telco providers. their diesel generator lasted for a whopping 20 minutes before it kicked the bucket and shut down leaving data centers such as Peer1 without power for upwards of 6 hours (Harbor center apparently came back online around 5PM). The only datacenter that seemed to be spared in the area was the Primus datacenter where Netdigix hosts most of their infrastructure and clients. Power is still out in Downtown Vancouver and is not supposed to return until late Tuesday night.
