Pioneer 16 Layer Blu-ray Holds 400GB of Data!

Author JoeDigital

Pioneer pioneers multi-layer Blu-Ray TechnologyUp until now, a DVD could hold a maximum of 50 GB of information, and even was rare.  Pioneer has now broken that threshold with new disk writing and reading technology, and announced a 16 layer read-only disk that can handle as much as 48 hours of video.

Cynics are quick to point out that consumers might balk at the cost of a DVD that looks like all the other DVDs on the market at a glance, but costs many times more in price.  But those cynics have apparently never gone on a Star Trek TNG binge, and watched the whole series, or wished they didn’t have have to change disks just watch Season 3 of Sex in the City.

And even though the opening, which was expected at the International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage, which began Sunday in Hawaii, is a read-only drive, Pioneer is quick to point out that a writable version is most likely going to be available in the near future.  I think I’m going to need a bigger bowl of popcorn.
