Large number of wires adds up though they are tiny and generate heat in plenty as they carry electrons in them. For instance, Sony Playstation 3 is being powered by the most advanced chip which carries nine cores. IBM (International Business Machine)’s researchers dreamt of having hundreds of them in one single chip but wondered how would they communicate as wires would be in plenty. IBM came with a solution by light. IBM detailed about communications being shared across the cores on single chip and this is accomplished with the help of light pulses that travels via silicon and not electrons. IBM’s breakthrough was described in details in Optics Express journal basically centers on a device that is opto-electro that modulates the light. This is smaller by beyond 100 times in comparison to modulators that are similar and also greater reduction in cost.
