This coming Monday, June 30th, will mark the end of Microsoft XP. Although it will still be available from some manufacturers until January of 2009, many computer users are upset about having to switch to the Vista OS.

“We’ve spent more than a year consulting withour ustomers and industry partners to ensure that we’re doing the right thing,”
Microsoft says at its Web site, The Future of Windows XP.“
Micrsoft’s Vista will become their premier Operating System next month, despite having gotten bad reviews and only now becoming fully supported by a complete range of drivers and utilities. Microsoft provides an update with current fixes in , which greatly enhances Vista’s performance.
Oregon Scientific’s Meteo Weather Forecasting Watch

Oregon Pacific has today’s gadget offering, the Meteo Weather Forecast Watch. It is water resistant up to 30 meters deep, and uses barometric readings to forecast weather conditions for up to 24 hours, using 4 easy-to-read icons to display whether its going to rain or shine. I’m not really sure how this replaces looking up, but it’s a terrific toy to show off to your friends who aren’t allowed to go outside. Luckily, for your US$69.99, it also tells the time and has a stopwatch function that runs for up to 60 hours. And it looks cool, too!

21st Century Architecture: The Dynamic Tower
Author ColGlobe | 25.06.2008 | Category Innovation

Here’s a building like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Built around a stationary central tower, every floor on this 80 story building rotates. It’s self-powered, with photovoltaic cells and wind-driven turbines between every floor- there’s even power left over to provide to adjacent structures. It’s called the Dynamic Tower because it’s literally got many thousands of possible combinations that could be achieved as each independent floor rotates.
My first thought was this is something that’s so far in the future that it will never happen, but the plans are already finalized, and actual construction on the first of two is set to begin in late 2008. One will be built in Moscow, and the other in Dubai. At US$3000/sq. foot, it’s not designed for any but the most elite, but still, I’d like to live at the end of the block, just to watch it change through the course of the day.
Accidental Discovery By Physicists Could Presage Faster Computers
Author JoeDigital | 24.06.2008 | Category Computers, Technology
ScienceDaily (June 25, 2008) — Physicists at
UC Riverside have made an accidental discovery in the lab that has
potential to change how information in computers can be transported or
stored. Dependent on the “spin” of electrons, a property electrons
possess that makes them behave like tiny magnets, the discovery could
help in the development of spin-based semiconductor technology such as
ultrahigh-speed computers.
Even though we are still a few years away from this technology, it might bear keeping a close eye on. Imagine, if you will, trinary (off, on, and none-of-the-above) functions performed at sub-atomic levels. Technology such as that could put a supercomputer into something as small as, for instance, the head of a pin.

D-Link Unveils The RangeBooster N Dual-Band Wireless Router
Author JoeDigital | 23.06.2008 | Category Computers, Consumer Electronics, Networking

D-Link has been a big player in the wireless networking business for years, and they’ve just secured their status with the newly unveiled 802.11n wireless router, simply named the RangeBooster N Dual Band Router. For starters, it operates at either 5GHz or the more conventional 2.4GHz, and after that it just keeps getting better.
It can stream HD video for media players, consoles or, for those old-school geeks among us, computers. Using the soon-to-be finalized wireless N protocol, this device offers up to 100Mbps, which is nearly twice as fast as today’s wireless G, and users of 802.11g will still be able to connect, albeit not at the high speed.
Perhaps the most encouraging part of the package is the price. With an initial retail value of just over $100, Best Buy will be turning it loose at the bargain price of $79. Married men won’t miss another night of football, even if they are sent to the doghouse, because another feature of 802.11n is a far greater broadcast range.
Nanotechnology Bra Turns Implants Into Powerplants
Author JoeDigital | 23.06.2008 | Category Consumer Electronics, Innovation, Technology
With the rising price of fuel, everybody is looking for a way to save power, and now there is a bright future ahead for well-endowed women. Not only will these bras offer support, but they may also be able to harness simple kinetic energy, and turn it into enough power to operate an iPod.

While the concept of using a bra to generate electricity isn’t new- Japanese researchers have developed a solar-collecting bra- the idea of using the natural motion of breasts to operate a small device is an exciting new development. It would employ nanowires to absorb power directly from the motion of breasts during normal and strenuous exercise.
There’s still a lot research and development to be done, of course, but the idea is already percolating in more than one research department, and the theory appears to be sound. You can find the whole story at Slate.
